Steel consumption in Latin America will increase 3.5% this year, according to regional steel association Alacero's director general, Rafael Rubio.
Steel consumption in Latin America grew 1.4% in January-April compared with the same period last year, Rubio told BNamericas.
He added that Alacero expects consumption in the second quarter will be up compared to January-April, and that the growth rate should continue to increase for the rest of the year, thanks to an overall strengthening of the global economy.
Alacero expects Latin American economies to grow between 2% and 2.5% in 2014.
In the first four months of the year crude steel production in the region grew 1% to 21.5Mt. Leader Brazil produced 8.5Mt, followed by Mexico with 5.5Mt, according to a recent Alacero report.
