ArcelorMittal has not ruled out Karnataka to set up its automotive steel manufacturing facility with Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), even as it is evaluating sites across India.
Both steel makers are working with Roland Berger Strategy Consultant to undertake a comprehensive study on potential locations. A team from Roland Berger Strategy Consultant had met landowners in Hubballi in Karnataka earlier this month. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah early this week had said there was no representation from the companies to seek land for the proposed project.
"We are in the process of assessing options so wouldn't rule anything in or out at this stage," an ArcelorMittal spokesperson said in a statement.
A joint team of SAIL and ArcelorMittal representatives is working on preparing a feasibility study in relation to the potential automotive steel manufacturing facility, the firm said. A SAIL spokesperson said it was too early to comment as no location had been identified.
"As a part of the feasibility study, the joint team, with the support of Roland Berger Strategy Consultant, is undertaking a comprehensive study on potential locations. No decision has been taken regarding the location for the potential automotive steel plant,” the spokesperson said in the statement.
In May, both SAIL and ArcelorMittal signed a memorandum of understanding for the joint venture and the plant to meet growing demand for steel from automakers in India.
Vasant Ladwa, the president of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Hubballi, said the Roland Berger team had met the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board officials for the project in Hubballi.
