The accident at the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), which claimed six lives including two deputy general managers, has affected a part of the operations at the unit. While operations at BSP, which is among the country's leading steel plants, were affected on Thursday, this morning, some of the blast furnaces, coke oven batteries and mills remained operational, an official said.
The newly appointed union steel minister Mr Narendra Singh Tomar and chairman of Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Mr C S Verma are due to visit the facilities at Bhilai today. The SAIL management is due to take a call on the plant operations after a thorough inspection of the accident site. Late last evening SAIL had said a high level inquiry will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the accident. On Friday, the minister is likely to announce the name of the person who will lead the team into the accident inquiry.
In an official update on the accident about an hour back, SAIL said: "Out of those who were brought to the hospital, 21 people have been released after first aid and necessary treatment. Nine persons are still admitted in the hospital for observation and medical treatment. Condition of these nine persons is stable and they are out of danger." An earlier statement released by SAIL last evening said : "The main header of Pump House No.2 which supplies water to the Gas Cleaning Plants (GCP) of Blast Furnaces at BSP suddenly ruptured at around 18:10 hours on Thursday. This resulted in sudden loss in water pressure to the GCPs and the Blast Furnace gas from the scrubbers entered the water pipeline affecting the people attending the breakdown in the pump house and in the nearby area."
