A blaze broke out Monday at the AK Steel plant in Dearborn, company and fire officials said.
"A conveyor belt at the plant's blast furnace caught fire," said Barry Racey, director of government and public relations at AK Steel Corp.
The fire at the facility near Miller Road was under control by 5 p.m., he said. Crews had extinguished the blaze and cleared the scene by 7 p.m., according to the Dearborn Fire Department.
No injuries were reported. Racey said no further details were available until the company assesses the damage.
Earlier Monday, former state Rep. Rashida Tlaib posted a picture on Twitter showing black smoke billowing near the plant, which Severstal last year announced would be sold to AK Steel, an Ohio company.
Now known as Dearborn Works, it's on a more than 350-acre site and has operations including carbon steel melting, according to the company website. Its blast furnace was rebuilt in 2007 and "is among the most efficient and productive blast furnaces in the world for its size," the site read.
In 2004, Severstal acquired most of Rouge Steel, a former unit of Ford Motor Co., after that steelmaker filed for bankruptcy in 2003.
