Brazil's production of crude steel grew 2.7 percent last month compared with October 2013, following six consecutive months of flat or declining output, the industry association said Monday.
Output totaled 3.05 million tons in October as the sector enjoyed its best month since March, the Brazil Steel Institute said.
Production of flat steel, however, fell 6.5 percent to 2.13 million tons.
Brazil, Latin America's largest steel producer, turned out 28.6 million tons of crude steel in January-October, off 0.7 percent from the same period last year.
At 20.9 million tons, output of flat steel is down 5 percent from the first 10 months of 2013.
Domestic sales of steel products plunged 10.6 percent in October to 1.8 million tons, bringing the year-to-date total to 17.7 million tons, a decline of 8.7 percent from the comparable period in 2013.
Brazil's steel exports by value climbed 17.6 percent in the first 10 months of 2014 to $5.53 billion.
Foreign sales surged 30.1 percent in October to $665.4 million.
