The Centre is hopeful of Odisha producing additional 10-12 million tonne of steel in the next six years if basic raw material linkages like iron ore, coal and water are provided without delay to different projects.
This possibility figured at a meeting held here on Monday between Union steel secretary Rakesh Singh and chief secretary G C Pati. Singh came to take a stock of different steel projects.
"There was no discussion on Posco project, which is looked after by mines ministry. Both the central and state governments are committed to the project," the steel secretary said.
The state government has signed 50 MoUs exclusively on steel. The projects have total estimated capacity of 80 million tonne. Though some of them have since begun production, industry sources said unavailability of raw materials like iron ore and coal in required quantity have slowed down the projects. The closure of a good number of mines against the backdrop of mining scam and Supreme Court direction has compounded their problem.
The meeting focused on eight private and six public sector projects. The steel secretary felt the state government's support for raw material linkages to the projects had been 'encouraging'.
The chief secretary advised the central PSUs and private companies to put their statutory clearance applications on fast-track with all the required papers, including DGPS maps, land schedules and compensatory afforestation plan. He said the industrial houses should immediately take possession of acquired lands and begin construction works as delay in the matter could lead to legal and social complications. Official sources said Odisha produces about 12 million tonne of steel, including 4 MT from Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), 2.5 MT from Bhushan Steel Limited (Dhenkanal) and 2.3 MT from Bhushan Steel and Power (Sambalpur).
