The Chilean government is looking to impose tighter quality standards on imported steel following complaints by local producers over the wave of Chinese steel entering the country.
Deputy Finance Minister Alejandro Micco said Wednesday the ministry could order customs to use the same quality controls for imported steel as those used by domestic steelmakers.
"It seems obvious that we need a level playing field," the minister said.
Under the proposal, customs officials would employ the same standard used by the Housing Ministry for steel produced in Chile.
Chilean producers CAP and Gerdau AZA have reduced steel production in recent years in the face of growing imports from China, which rose 66% to 488,000 mt in the first five months of the year.
Earlier this month, Latin American steel association Alacero called on governments in the region to take action to restrict Chinese imports, including imposing quality standards and anti-dumping rules.
