China’s exports of stainless steel declined 11.1% from a month ago and 21.09% from a year ago to stand at 283,700 mt in June, according to data from China Customs.
For the same month, imports of stainless steel came in at 48,200 mt, down 31.5% from May and 71.1% from June 2018.
Cargoes that originated from Indonesia accounted for 6,500 mt, down 74.2% month on month and 94% year on year.
China's Ministry of Commerce decided earlier this week that it will impose anti-dumping tariffs of 18.1% to 103.1% on stainless steel billets and hot-rolled stainless steel plates from the European Union, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia from July 23.
This decision came after year-long anti-dumping probes, which has lowered the share of Indonesian stainless steel to total imports to China.
China’s move, however, had little impact on stainless steel production in Indonesia, as Indonesia stepped up exports to other countries.
An SMM survey showed that China’s output of stainless steel came in at 2.34 million mt in June, down 2.34% from May but up 23.73% from June 2018.
