Essar Steel on Thursday announced the commissioning of its Integrated Pellet Complex comprising an iron ore beneficiation facility at Dabuna in Keonjhar district and a six million tonne per annum (MTPA) pellet plant at Paradip connected by a 253 km long slurry pipeline.
The company has invested `6000 crore in the project, designed to process low grade iron ore fines into pellets that can be used as raw material for steel making. The pipeline running through four districts has a capacity to carry 12 MTPA ore slurry from the beneficiation to pellet plant.
“The pipeline is the lifeline of the complex. It is not only cost effective but also environment friendly with bare minimum carbon footprint. It completely eliminates the need of road and rail network for transportation. It will substantially bring down the cost of production,” executive vice-chairman of the company Firdose Vandervala said here on Thursday.
With addition of new facilities, Essar has become the largest pellet producer in the country with annual production capacity of 14 MTPA including the eight MTPA complex at Visakhapatnam. In order to add another six MTPA pellet plant at Paradip, the second phase expansion of the complex has also entered into an advanced stage and is expected to be commissioned within a year. The complex is backed by a 120-MW captive power plant and a captive berth at Paradip port.
The pellets will be used by its own steel making units that have an annual production capacity of 10 MTPA. The overflow will be supplied to other manufacturers with priority to industries in Odisha, Chief Executive Officer Rajendra Mittal said.
The company has also shown keenness to carry forward its steel plant plans. It is hopeful of speedy completion of land acquisition over 2500 acres allotted to the company. At present, it is in possession of 400 acres including 320 acres at Paradip and 85 acres at Dabuna.
“The signs are positive from the Government. The processes have been expedited and we hope to acquire more land soon,” Mittal added.
