The 12 major Indian ports handled 12.872 million tons (mt) of iron ore in financial year 2015-16, down 28.13% compared to 17.909 mt handled in financial year 2014-15, according to data released by the Indian Ports Association (IPA).
However, these major ports handled 2.115 mt of iron ore in March 2016, up 54.60% compared to 1.368 mt handled in February 2016 on a m-o-m basis as well as up 51.07% compared to 1.400 mt iron ore handled in March 2015 on a y-o-y basis.
Among the major ports, Vishakhapatnam Port handled the highest volume of iron ore, at 5.979 mt, in the year 2015-16. This volume, however, was lower than 8.365 mt iron ore handled by the port in 2014-15.
However, Marmagoa Port handled the highest volume of iron ore, at 1.170 mt, in March 2016. This volume, however, was much higher than 0.501 mt iron ore moved through the port in February 2016.
Among the major ports, only Marmagoa had the distinction of handling higher volume of iron ore, at around 3.965 mt, during 2015-16, compared to 0.758 mt iron ore handled during 2014-15.
On the other hand, Vishakhapatnam and Marmagoa were the only ports which handled more iron ore on a m-o-m basis. While Vishakhapatnam Port handled 0.860 mt iron ore in March 2016 (0.727 mt handled in February 2016), Marmagoa Port handled 1.170 mt in March 2016 (0.501 mt handled in February 2016).
There was no movement of iron ore through Ennore, Chennai, Cochin, Mumbai and JNPT during financial year 2015-16. Among these 5 ports, only Chennai handled 0.146 mt cargo of iron ore during 2014-15 while there was no iron ore movement via the 4 other ports.
There was no movement of iron ore through Kolkata, Paradip, Ennore, Chennai, Tuticorin, Cochin, Mumbai, New Mangalore and JNPT in March 2016. Among these 9 ports, only New Mangalore handled 0.052 mt iron ore in February 2016 while there was no iron ore movement via the rest of the 8 ports.
