The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notice to the Union Government on a writ petition moved by Jindal Steel Power Limited challenging a recent official order by which the end-use norms of coal blocks in Chhattisgarh and Odisha were changed from sponge iron and steel to power.
Jindal Steel Power Limited is owned by former Congress MP Naveen Jindal. The company was allocated coal blocks for setting up sponge iron and steel production in the two States.
Under the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Ordinance, 2014, promulgated after the Supreme Court cancelled the coal block allocations, the end-use was changed with the provision for auction of blocks.
A Division Bench comprising Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva issued notice to the Union Coal Ministry in the case and asked it to come with an explanation why and where the end-use was changed. The Court posted the matter for hearing on Thursday.
