Iron ore handling at 12 major ports in India stood at 7.86 million tons (mt) in the first nine months from April to December, down 37.94% from 12.67 mt during the same period in 2014, according to data released by the Indian Ports Association (IPA).
Vishakhapatnam Port handled the highest volume of iron ore at 6.85 mt in April-December. This volume, however, was double compared to 3.86 mt iron ore moved through the port in the same period last year.
Maximum fall in iron ore handling was noticed at New Mangalore Port. It came down to 0.33 mt in April-December, 2015 from 1.33 mt in April-December of 2014.
Eight major ports showed positive growth in total traffic handling in April-December, while the remaining four showed negative growth on a year-on-year basis.
