The fourth round of coal auction has received a lame response from steel and cement firms, forcing the government to consider deferring the bidding.
A government official said the response for most blocks is not encouraging as the steel industry is going through a rough phase.
The government is exploring to either defer the bidding or extend the deadline for submission of bids.
The coal ministry is likely to take a decision this week, the official said.
December 28 was the last date for purchasing the bid documents while December 31 is the deadline for submitting the bids.
The technical bids for the coal blocks are scheduled to be opened on January 4, while the electronic auction is scheduled for January 18-22
