Layoffs have begun at U.S. Steel in Fairfield. Earlier this year, the company confirmed a number of employees would receive pink slips.
U.S. Steel says the layoffs are part of ongoing adjustments being made, due to global market conditions. They say more will notices will continue going out to employees. Up to 1,800 employees could be laid off as the adjustments are made.
President and CEO of U.S. Steel Mario Longhi told ABC 33/40 in January, the layoffs are considered temporary and jobs could return if market conditions improve. Despite Jefferson County Commissioners offering tax abatement's, totaling $14 million over ten years, the first round of layoffs still came.
At its peak, during World War Two, U.S. Steel employed close to 50,000 people in Fairfield.
