The Town of Sinje in Grand Cape Mount County, Gawula District, was a scene of jubilation recently when an Australian mining giant, Tawana Resources Incorporated, announced the discovery of a huge deposit of iron ore in the region.
The company, which is operating under the Mofe Creek Mining Exploration license, was granted a permit by the Ministry of Lands Mines and Energy (MLM&E) on December 13, 2012, to carry out exploration to determine the existence, quantity and quality of ore in a designated area.
The company's general manager, Fredrick Van Haute, told this newspaper that a total of 100 million metric tons of direct shipping ore was discovered during the period of exploration.
Following the discovery, Mr. Haute said he would enter a mineral development agreement with the Government of Liberia after the period of exploration.
He indicated that if all goes as planned, the mining process will commence in 2016 with the construction of a pilot plant capable of producing 1000 metric tons of ore.
Mr. Haute pointed out that during this period the company will hire and train Liberians for large scale mining by the year 2017 at which time production will increase to 2.5 metric tons of ore per shipment.
He assured Sinje residents of his company's readiness to improve their lives.
He indicated that the company will work along with existing health institutions in the country to deliver health services to employees and residents of the mining area.
The Daily Observer made several attempts to contact Mr. Patrick Sendolo, Minister of Lands, Mines and Energy to obtain confirmation of the discovery but was unsuccessful and a text message to him went unanswered.
Meanwhile, geologist and former Lands, Minds and Energy Minister, and former Grand Kru County Senator Cletus Segbe Wotorson, in a telephone conversation late last night confirmed that Sinje and the surrounding areas in Cape Mount are endowed with large deposits of iron ore.
"I'm aware of the presence of Tawana Resources Incorporated in the country," Senator Wotorson said, "and so the information about the discovery of large deposits of iron ore in Sinje is possible."
