Nordic Bulk Carriers will use hatches made of plastic instead of steel on one of its cargo vessels.
The Danish owner has received approval from Panama’s flag authority for the use of fibre-reinforced, lightweight composite.
It is the first time that this fabric has been given the green light to be used on a SOLAS ship.
The design is expected to make the ship lighter and reduce fuel consumption.
In cooperation with the SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, Nordic will convert one of its bulkers built at Japan’s Oshima yard.
Tommy Hertzberg, fire researcher at SP, said: “We have contributed our know-how to DNV-GL, which in conjunction with the Japanese shipyard Oshima has produced a clever, lightweight design which resolves many of the problems there are with steel hatches.”
