Despite several big-ticket steel projects in limbo, the state government has decided to set up a separate steel directorate. The directorate will be under the steel and mines department and would expedite the steel projects hanging in fire for years.
"The chief minister's office has asked us to send a final proposal in this regard. We have already started working on it. It would address problems of steel sector in the state," said steel and mines minister Prafulla Mallick.
The directorate would facilitate land acquisition and raw material linkage. An additional secretary-ranked officer will be in charge of the directorate.
The state government has signed MoUs with 50 steel companies in the last one decade of which 30 have started partial production. Meanwhile, big companies like ArcelorMittal has already backed out of its project while Posco is on the verge of quitting.
"The state government has been taking all efforts to facilitate industrialization in the state and recently released Industrial Policy Resolution (IPR) 2015. This directorate will give special focus on steel sector and help in materializing the projects," Mallick added.
Experts pointed out it as a move to pacify disgruntled investors, who cannot start their projects in the state due to various problems.
"Will setting up a new directorate would help in sorting out the problems? As such an officer is handling the issues in the department. Something should be done at the field level instead of doing things in pen and paper," said an industry insider requesting anonymity.
