Fifty tonnes of liquid steel spilled following a technical snag in the converter of newly commissioned Steel Melt Shop-2 of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Monday. Terming the incident as ‘minor,’ a RINL official said they were in the process of restoring production in SMS-2. No casualties were reported in the incident.
Now in SMS-2, production has to be banked on only converter. “Our suspicion is that the incident took place due to damage sustained to the internal lining during Cyclone Hudhud and the subsequent shutdown of the plant,” Steel Plant Employees’ Union deputy general secretary J. Simhachalam said.
Stating that there was compromise in complying with safety parameters, he said installing of a scanning machine could have prevented the incident with timely warning when liner life of converter crossed stipulated heats.
