In yet another setback to Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd's attempts to revive the Hudhud-hit Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) the valve at a pump house supplying water to the steel-maker's captive thermal power plant (TPP) broke down. Subsequently, the TPP tripped, leaving VSP to depend solely on the nearly 100MW being supplied by the state government.
According to VSP sources, the breakdown of valve caused several motors in the pump house to be submerged in nearly three metres of water. Sources said that efforts were underway to drain the water from the motors to restart pumping of water to the TPP.
"The entire process might take 24-48 hours as the water has to be drained and then the motors have to be sent to the electrical repair shop to have their condition checked. After that they'll have to fix it and start supplying water again to the TPP," said a trade union source. "The state government has started supplying 100MW power due to which basic operations are being carried out at VSP," he added.
