U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand are calling for the International Trade Commission (ITC) to stop Mexico and Turkey from dumping cheap steel rebar into the United States.
They claim that low-priced foreign-made rebar is threatening the health of the United States steel market at companies such as Klein Steel, which is headquartered in Rochester and has locations in Buffalo and Albany.
The domestic rebar industry is operating at only 60 percent capacity, a historic low, and has been forced to close facilities and lay off workers due to foreign dumping, the senators claim.
Klein and other steel companies brought their case in September 2013. The ITC will make the final decision on Oct. 23 to determine if duties should be ordered on steel rebar entering the U.S. from Mexico and Turkey, which would effectively level the playing field.
