The Steel Plant Employees Union, the workers union at Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL's) special steels unit Salem Steel Plant, has issued a notice to the management to go on strike on or after July 26, if the Union's demand for an enhancement in the productivity incentive scheme.
P Panneerselvam, president of the union said that it has been demanding for a revision of the scheme, which offers incentives for employees for achieving the set target, as the capacity of the plant has been increased and the facility has become an integrated steel manufacturing unit.
"The present scale of incentive scheme was announced in 2008, though the facility was added with a steel melting shop in 2010. For the last four years, we have been asking for an increased scale considering the increase in works," he said.
The Union has handed out a strike notice to the management two days back, stating that it will go for strike on or after July 26. The matter has now to be negotiated in the presence of a senior labour department official. However, he alleged that the company is trying to question the credibility of the union by seeking for a secret ballot to decide the negotiating employees union
The company, on the other side, said that the Executive Director, Salem Steel Plant, held a meeting with senior officers to take stock of the situation. "In order to keep the plant running, Salem Steel Plant management is making all necessary arrangements including possible request to the district authorities for deployment of police to avoid untoward incidents," said the company.
The facility at present has around 1000 permanent employees, around 330 officers and another 700 contract workers of which 400 are from industrial co-operative service society and the rest are employed directly from contractors.
According to company website, its Steel Melting Shop has a capacity of 180,000 tonne per annum, Hot Rolling Mill has 364,000 tonnes capacity and Cold Rolling Mill has 66,000 tonne per annum. It also has a blanking line with 3,600 tonne per annum.
