Ranchi:
The NPTC Ltd. on Monday issued a statement, stating it has produced 16.05
million metric tonnes (MMT) of coal from its four operational mines located in
Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh between April 1 and September 30.
The central PSU said its production in the first two quarters of the ongoing
2023-24 financial year was 83% higher than the 8.76 MMT coal produced in the
first two quarters of 2022-23 financial year.
The NTPC has two operational coal mines in Jharkhand in Pakri-Barwadih and
Chatti-Bariatu coal projects. Besides, it has captive coal mines in Dulanga of
Odisha and Talaipallin of Chhattisgarh. The PSU has produced over 85 MMT coal
since its inception, it claimed. Moreover, it has started mining operations in
Kerendari mines of Jharkhand and its production is expected to start in the
present financial year.
The PSU has recently incorporated the NTPC Mining Limited (NML) which is its
wholly owned subsidiary, for developing a focussed mining competence. The NTPC
and the NML inked a business transfer agreement in August.

The Parsa East Kanta Basan (PEKB) coal
mine in Chhattisgarh, allocated to Rajasthan State Electricity Generation
Corporation Limited (RVUNL), has stopped production due to delays in obtaining
permission for tree felling. Coal transportation from the mine will halt from
October 1. The closure could affect around 5,000 direct and indirect jobs. The
Rajasthan government has been urging the Chhattisgarh government to expedite
the necessary clearances for the second phase of mining. However, environmental
concerns and upcoming elections have slowed down the process.
Once known for coal mining, Ramgarh now tourist hotspot
Ramgarh, known for coal mining, is
becoming a popular tourist destination with the development of the Patratu Lake
Resort and plans to revamp the Rajrappa temple. The Jharkhand Tourism
Development Corporation is investing in the development of these places, along
with other popular tourist spots in the state. The resort offers water-related
activities and attracts many local tourists daily.
Trade unions call 3-day strike in CIL coal mines over wages
All five central trade unions have called
for a strike in all Coal India subsidiaries from October 5 to 7. The unions are
protesting against the alleged move by Coal India management to curtail wages
as agreed upon under the National Coal Wage agreement. The unions are
determined to strike if the wage agreement is amended. Public meetings and
demonstrations will be held to mobilize workers leading up to the strike. A
delegation of MPs from Tamil Nadu has also sought the Centre's intervention in
securing the state's share of Cauvery water.
